Spectrum Engineers designed the award-winning lighting systems, provided electrical
and acoustical engineering and designed sound systems for this 17,000 sq. ft. addition
and renovation of the existing, St. John's Episcopal Church. The original church
building was completed in 1909 and is on Utah's register of historic spaces. The
2004 historically sensitive addition/renovation project also included the relocation
of the existing 3500 sq. ft. Champ House-a neighboring property purchased by the
Parish in 1997 that is used for support functions. Lighting is particularly sensitive
to the historic nature of the building and to liturgical functions. Old lanterns
were retrofitted to use energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps on dimmers. The
addition features reproductions of the historic lanterns. New altar lighting supports
services, remains out of view of windows and lanterns and maintains consistent illumination
on the altar despite daylight.
