This new, 27,850 sq. ft. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) temple
is a single-spire design. It is clad in white granite native to the state of Espirito,
Brazil, and houses two endowment rooms and two sealing rooms. Spectrum Engineers
provided specialty interior, exterior and site lighting for this project. The Spectrum
team carefully coordinated with local craftspeople and trades to complete the design
and construction of this temple. Temples are especially sensitive to current lighting
levels and visual comfort. Spectrum’s challenge was to find the right balance between
the two to appropriately support temple activities. A successful balance between
specifying less expensive, locally manufactured fixtures versus utilizing imported
and more costly lighting fixtures for performance reasons or to address a specific
application was achieved. Fixtures and sources were selected for comfort, aesthetics
and to support specific tasks. The Spectrum team was very careful to design and
specify outdoor lighting systems to appropriately illuminate the façade, eliminate
shadow, conceal light sources preventing glare and finding balance and uniform lighting
for safety and beauty and achieve dark skies-friendly lighting that is friendly
to surrounding neighbors by exhibiting special sensitivity to avoiding light trespass.
