Salt Lake City, Utah
The Capitol was completely updated and restored. Historic finishes were restored
and modern systems concealed to maintain the classic architecture. The project totals
$212 million, involves 320,000 sq. ft. and encompasses a decade of planning, design
and construction. Spectrum Engineers designed modern mechanical, electrical, plumbing
and technology (MEP/T) systems. The firm faced three challenges in integrating new
systems while taking the building back to its original form: 1. identifying pathways
for distribution, 2. “correcting” historic spaces while concealing modern systems
and, 3. designing “second-to-none” technologies. Design for the Capitol was truly
collaborative. Spectrum’s many disciplines, the architect, owner, contractors and
artisans pulled together to update this iconic structure for the people and state
government of Utah, to bring it back to its original architectural splendor and
to ensure its viability as a statehouse for another century.
