Novell Building H

Novell planned a new office building and data center to consolidate its Orem and Provo campuses into one facility. The new $45 million facility houses corporate offices, plus the approximately 12,000 sq. ft. data center for the company.

Spectrum engineered the facility according to the requirements of Novell, a leading network, software and word processing firm. The data center includes:

  • A new meter to serve the entire campus
  • four 4,000-amp, 480-volt primary distribution systems
  • two 2,000-watt emergency generators
  • two 1,000-kilovolt-amp Uninterruptible Power Supply systems
  • a switchgear with motorized circuit breakers so power can be automatically channeled to where it is needed, allowing maximum generator usage

The campus is expected to require six megawatts of electricity—enough to power two large sports arenas, such as the Energy Solutions Arena, or six subdivisions of 150 homes each.

Technology designers from Spectrum helped Novell and the electrical contractor conceive, design and install a complex teledata system, including:

  • Over 4 million sq. ft. of voice/data cable
  • Over 1 million ft. of Cat6 cable
  • 5 million ft. of copper cabling
  • 50,000 fiber optic terminations
  • 15,000 jacks in office areas
  • 5,000 jacks in laboratory areas (18)
  • 1 million ft. of multi-mode and single-mode fiber in the building’s communication system backbone
  • 1.8 million ft. of multi-mode fiber in the data center
